Training for medical specialization (Phoniatrician) requires basic medical education, followed by specialization (a Master Degree), and then possibly, an academic Doctoral Degree. Duties of the Phoniatrician include making the diagnosis, drawing the plan of intervention, performing parts of the intervention program, educating and training personnel in the field, and conducting research.
Training for the non-medical specialization (Logopedist/Speech Pathologist) requires an undergraduate degree in language, psychology and sociology, or, communicative sciences and disorders when available, followed by postgraduate training in Logopedics [Speech Pathology] to earn a Master Degree, perhaps followed by a Doctoral Degree (PhD). A Clinical Competence Certificate [CCC] is also required. The CCC is a professional certificate vis a vis the PhD which is an academic certificate. Duties of the Logopedist include sharing in the diagnostic procedures and formal testing, developing and performing the behavior re-adjustment therapeutic methods (BRAT), sharing in the educational process for personnel in the field, and collaborating in the research programs.
